This picture-book version of a Japanese folk tale takes place on a sunny spring day, when the inhabitants of a small Japanese village are all enjoying the beauty of the newly blossomed cherry trees. But the village's rich, miserly landlord--ruminating on how silly it is for anyone to be happy--becomes so caught up in his dark thoughts that he accidentally eats a cherry pit, japanese flowering cherry tree and soon a cherry tree is growing out of the top of his head.
